Non-Credit Course for New MSU Students

The course "Fundamentals of Intermediate Mathematics" is being offered on a non-credit basis to new MSU students. You can register now, but the course will not begin until the Summer semester.

Fundamentals of Intermediate Mathematics

Fundamentals of Intermediate Mathematics course covers a basic selection of material from two years of high school algebra. It is intended to provide students with a sufficient background to succeed in a course in College Algebra (Math 103). Many students have successfully completed this course and gone on to succeed in College Algebra. Topics covered are properties of real numbers, linear equations, polynomial and exponential functions, and some rational functions, with an emphasis on the development of both skills and concepts. There is a considerable emphasis on problem solving.

This is a self-paced course, with all materials and testing delivered via the internet. Students progress through a text-workbook on their own, with access to assistance via email and telephone. Some "in person" help may also be made available on a limited basis. Practice problems are provided in an interactive format.

The course is open only to students who have been admitted to MSU but have not yet actually attended any courses on campus. The course is a non-credit course that is approximately equivalent to Math 1825 at MSU. The course is a non-credit course, graded on a pass/fail basis. The course will not appear on the student's university transcript. Online exams for each chapter, plus a final exam, are used for grading. and students who pass the course will be allowed to by-pass Math 1825 and go directly into either Math 103 or Math 110. (Since no permanent record is created by this course, students passing the course and wishing to by-pass Math 1825 must receive a numerical grade in either Math 103 or Math 110 no later than Summer Semester 2003, or this exemption from taking Math 1825 will expire.).
