Patty Peek is an associate professor at the MSU College of Nursing.
She has been teaching in the graduate program since its inception and now
serves as the coordinator for the college's outreach Master's program in
northern Michigan.
Patty lives in Petoskey (approximately 206 minutes from East Lansing) and has helped to pioneer the use of interactive television to facilitate learning for students who live a distance from course instructors. She is currently teaching courses in Gaylord, East Lansing, and Muskegon, Michigan using these teaching modalities. Nursing practice has been a major focus of Patty's. After 15 years of practice as a clinical nurse specialist with a busy pediatric pulmonary service, she moved north and began to work in primary care. She is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner at a rural community health center in East Jordan, Michigan. Her practice with infants, children, and adolescents encompasses a wide range of sociodemographic groups, including a large population of medically under served clients. Patty is actively involved in community service, including more than 20 years as a volunteer for the camp for children with cystic fibrosis. Her most recent adventure was a two week medical mission to Siberia! |

Barbara Given is a Professor and Director of the Center for Nursing
Research at Michigan State University, Associate Director for the Cancer
Prevention and Control Division of Michigan State University's Cancer Center,
and Director for Research for the Institute of Managed Care at Managed
Care at Michigan State University.
Dr. Given has been actively involved in research in long term care, home care, and family involvement in care for over 15 years with funding from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute on Mental Health, National Center for Nursing Research, Walther Cancer Center, State of Michigan, National Institute on Aging, and the American Cancer Society to explore these issues. Dr. Given has been active in Sigma Theta Tau, on the National Program Committee; Oncology Nursing Society (most recently on the Strategic Plan for Health Policy); and serves on the Expert Panel of Aging of the American Academy of Nursing, for which she is this year's Program Chair for the Annual Scientific Session. She was recently elected to the Governing Board of the American Academy of Nursing. She is a reviewer for fifteen professional journals and currently serves on the Editorial Board for RINAH and is Associate Editor for Cancer Nursing. She is currently serving as a regular study section grant reviewer for AHCPR and Psychosocial Research for the American Cancer Society. Barbara Given testified to the President's Breast Cancer Commission and served on the Institute of Medicine's Department of Defense Panel to decide on priorities for funding for breast cancer. She also served on the Blue Ribbon Panel for ACS to set direction for research for Behavioral and Psychosocial Research, and is currently on the State of Michigan Cancer Advisory Group for Colorectal Cancer. In 1994, she was the ANF Distinguished Researcher Award recipient and in 1995, the ONS Distinguished Researcher and the Michigan Association of Governing Boards Distinguished Faculty Award recipient. |

Beth Alexander is a professor in the department of Family Practice
in the College of Human Medicine. She has been active in the practice of
managed care since the early 1980's and in teaching and administration
within managed care for the past ten years.
Currently, she is one of the lead faculty for the curriculum in managed care at the College of Human Medicine at MSU, as well as having developed a curriculum at Oregon Health Science University during a fellowship there in 1995-96. Her other academic interests include adolescent health, human sexuality, and women's health. |

Angie Schmuecker is a Registered Nurse with a Bachelor's Degree from
Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan.
Her clinical experience is in the acute care setting with a focus on cardiology. In addition to working as the graduate assistant for Nursing 591, she plans to continue working in critical care on a per diem basis. She is currently enrolled in the Masters' program at Michigan State University and will ultimately function as a Family Nurse Practitioner. |
