Topics: Theoretical Issues in Comparative Criminal Justice
Course
Description: This course will examine concepts
and theory that explain crime causation and control in comparative
and cross-national context. Specifically, this course will
examine how crime is defined and measured as well as how social
correlates are interpreted. It will also examine how and why
crime rates differ in other countries; examine the concepts,
assumptions, and propositions of competing theoretical perspectives
of crime and delinquency; critique the relevance of culture-specific
theories in understanding cross-national crime problems; and,
discuss the utility of this research to address policy questions.

Description: The objective of this course is to
understand and become familiar with the concept of organized
crime, and with the extent and nature of organized crime,
as well as crime control strategies. Within this framework
of organized crime we will examine special problems which
include firearm related violence, drugs, money laundering,
smuggling, and corruption that transcend national boundaries.
Strategies to combat these problems and relevant policy issues
will be examined.
